Are you looking for legitimate ways to make extra money and get ahead financially? Are you tired of saving, only to make minor improvements in your finances?
If it’s one thing I’ve learned regarding personal finances, you need to earn more money than you spend to get ahead. It’s simple math. You have to have a positive balance each month in order to save anything.
There are two sides to getting ahead: earning more and spending less. It’s important to save as much of your hard earned money as possible. However, if you are serious about improving your finances, you also need to consider ways to make extra money.
While saving more money is necessary, there is only a limited amount you can save; the money that you earn.
Unlike saving money, earning money has an unlimited upside. You can start off making $30,000/year, but with a little hard work and effort end up making $150,000+/year (in this case, a 5x increase!). I work directly with people that make $150,000+/year and have met business owners that make well into seven-figures each year.
As long as you keep your expenses the same or similar while increasing your income, you will have significantly increased your ability to pay down debt, invest for the future, and, ultimately, have fun.
You need to work on both sides of the equation to truly get ahead and reach financial independence.
If you are looking for ways to earn extra money, I’ve created a list of 50+ legitimate way to make extra money below. I’ll continue to update this list as I discover more ways earn extra cash.
Table of Contents
Legitimate Ways to Make Extra Money Online

Taking paid surveys is one of the easiest ways to make extra money online. It requires little effort and can be completed when and where you choose. However, don’t expect to make a fortune. Paid surveys are best suited for earning money in your free time in between your more lucrative pursuits.
Please see below some of the better paid survey sites out there (in my opinion):

Are you interested in owning your own business? Do you enjoy writing and are passionate about a certain subject? Starting a blog is a low cost way to start a side business. It’s easy to get started as all you need is an idea for a site, a domain name, and hosting.
The best part is that it’s scalable. You won’t start off making significant money. However, if you stick with it, your blog has the potential to replace the full time income from your job one day.
Bloggers like Michelle Gardner (Making Sense of Cents) or Pat Flynn (Smart Passive Income) make well into six figures each year and some are even making $1,000,000+ each year.
I personally use Bluehost for hosting options on this site. I recommend them as they are affordable and I’ve had excellent service thus far.

It has never been easier to publish a book. The days of being beholden to a traditional publisher are gone.
You can easily begin selling your ebook independently (no middle man) and with no financial investment now with Amazon.com Kindle eBook publishing. With Kindle eBook publishing, your book will show up on Kindle stores internationally within 24-48 hours.
The only drawback is that you’ll be responsible for your own promotion. However, in today’s world of social media, that’s never been easier.

Do you have a passion for writing or a background in writing or editing? If so, you may find that online writing and editing work is just what you were looking for to make additional income.

Virtual assistants are similar to traditional assistants in that they execute a wide and varied range of services for their clients. To find available work, you can check out Fiverr, UpWork, Freelancer, and Problogger.
Pick Up Other Freelance Jobs
In addition to writing, editing, and virtual assistant work online, there are also other specific opportunities for online work such as programming, design, marketing, and data entry.
To find available work, you can check out Fiverr, UpWork, Freelancer, and Problogger.
Perform Tasks on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk
Amazon’s Mechanical Turk uses crowdsourcing to provide companies the ability to outsource manual tasks that are simple and repetitive.
That’s where you step in. You get paid to perform simple, tedious tasks such as classifying receipts, transcribing videos, tagging images, etc. The time for each task varies from a few minutes to a few hours and the pay depends on the task.
The company requesting the work approves the finished product before payment processing. Because of this, there is the opportunity for scammers to take advantage of the system.
To avoid scammers, please make sure you do your research before accepting a task. You can join a community such as MTurkCrowd which includes members that can help you identify the best tasks to target and which tasks to avoid.
Utilize Affiliate Marketing
Do you own a blog with a decent amount of traffic or have a large following on social media? If so, you could leverage that traffic into quick cash by recommending products you already use and love.
Most products you use everyday have some kind of affiliate program. They typically pay you a fee or percentage of the sale as a way to reward you for the sales referral. Some of the bigger sites used by affiliates include Amazon and Commission Junction.
Earn Cash Back While Shopping
What’s easier than earning money back on stuff you were going to buy anyways? There are several ways to achieve this.
One way is to sign up for cash back credit cards and earn a percentage back on purchases of certain categories (or for some cards a percentage on everything up to a certain threshold).
Another way is to use websites like Ebates (Ebates Review), ShopAtHome, or TopCashBack. You can earn up to 10% cash back if you make purchases with their approved merchants.
There are even apps that can help you earn cash back like the Ibotta app that allows you to earn cash back on qualifying purchases.
Make Money with Credit Card Signup Bonuses
If you have good credit, you can make extra money with credit card sign up offers. You can earn $100 – $400 in bonuses just by opening a credit card account and meeting the spending requirement. Best of all, if you no longer want or need the credit card, you can simply cancel.
For more information about making extra money with credit card bonus offers, please read: Make Extra Money From Home Churning Credit Cards.
Buy and Sell Domain Names
Are you good at identifying the next big thing? If so, you can make a living speculating on which domain names will become popular. You can buy a .com domain name for as little as $2.99 per year and less popular domain name extensions for less than that at GoDaddy.com.
You can then turnaround and sell the domain for much more. The top price paid for a domain in 2018 was ice.com for $3.5 million, but there are many domains that are worth much more.
Once you find the domain name you think will be the next big thing, you can list it on websites like Afternic, Flippa, Sedo, or even Ebay.
Make Money on YouTube
Do you crave attention or love the spotlight? You can make big money creating your own YouTube channel. The platform allows you to receive ad revenue, market affiliate products, and/or sell products you create yourself. Once you’re established and have at least 1000 subscribers and 4000 public watch hours, YouTube has a partner program that can help you scale your business even further.
I have a buddy that really loves video games, but also enjoys being in front of a camera and marketing. So, what did he do? He created a YouTube channel that consists primarily of him broadcasting professional computer game matches of games like Starcraft II, League of Legends, etc. He doesn’t make a fortune, but he makes enough, so that when left his job a few years ago, he was able to float for as long as he needed to find the right fit. Since then he’s moved his operations over to a Twitch channel on Twitch.tv.
The top 10 YouTube channels make anywhere from $15 – $22 million dollars a year. This goes to show you that this business model is very scalable. If you are interested, committed to making it work, and catch a lucky break or two, you can replace your full time income.
Work as an Online Translator
Are you fluent in a foreign language? You can make a good part-time income
translating blog posts, social media posts, support tickets, ebooks, etc.;
transcribing recorded speeches or lessons; or translating video. Get started
making money as a translator with websites like translate, unbabel, onehourtranslation, or rev.
Work as a Social Media Manager
Are you good at creating epic social media posts and/or creating and managing a group of followers on social media? If so, you could work as a social media manager for a business and manage their various social media platforms.
For many businesses, staying on top of Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter are key to driving traffic, but they just don’t have the time to do it well. They would rather pay someone with the time and knowledge to do it for them.
If you’re interested, you can ask the business you work at (if they don’t already have one), reach out to small businesses in your area, or look for gigs on Fiverr, UpWork, Freelancer, and Problogger.
Work for a Call Center from Home
Most call center work is now managed online and can be started with as little as a phone, computer, and reliable internet connection. Because of this, you can easily find work at a call center and earn money from home.
There are many different sites that list job openings for work-from-home call center positions such as SimplyHired, Freelancer, Accolade Support Call Center Services, Advanis, etc. There are even some big names companies that have online call center opportunities such as: 1-800-Flowers, Amazon.com, American Express, American Airlines, Apple at Home, etc.
Rent Out Your Car
Do you own a car, but often walk or bike to work/school? Do you own a second car that rarely gets used? You should think about renting it out for cash. Sites like Getaround or Turo will rent out your car for a daily (in some cases hourly) rate.
Answer Questions
Are you a subject matter expert or professional in your field? If so, sites like JustAnswer will pay you to answer questions related to your field either online or on the phone. To join, it’s as easy as registering, entering your area of expertise, and submitting your credentials. Once your approved, you can start helping people immediately and earn some extra cash in the process.
Rent Out a Room on Airbnb
Do you live near a tourist area and have a spare bedroom or second house? You should consider renting them out on Airbnb. You can rent a room or even your home for as long as you’d like and set your own prices.
Be careful where you do this however. Some cities have enacted ordinances or rules that discourage the use of Airbnb as it cuts into the profits of the Hotels and B&B’s. Just do a little homework before your take the leap.
Teach English Online
Do you have a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of teaching? If so, the company, VIPKID will pay you to teach English to international children online. You can make $14 – $22 per hour working the hours of your choosing.
Become an Online Proofreader
There are many different kinds of businesses that hire professionals to review their copy and content for errors prior to publication. The work can range from books, business presentations, academic articles, or even emails. As long as you have a computer and an internet connection, this work can be performed online at the comfort of your own home. If you’re interested, you can find job postings for online proofreading jobs on websites like FlexJobs, Babbletype, or Pure Content.
Take Up Photography and Sell Your Photos
Do you enjoy taking photographs? If so, why not monetize your hobby?
You can earn extra money selling your photos on site like 500px, SmugMug, and PhotoShelter.
If you’re good at taking pictures for stock photo purposes (less landscape more symbolism) you should also consider Shutterstock or IStockphoto.
If that wasn’t enough, you can also turn your photographs into cash by adding them to products (shirts, cups, canvas, etc.) and selling them on sites like Fine Art America or Etsy.
Ways to Make Money Fast
Sell Your Gently Used Clothes
Do you have clothes you no longer wear? Selling your unused clothes is a fast way to earn some extra money. You can start with local consignment shops for really quick cash, or use websites like Poshmark or Thredup to sell your clothes online.
Whether you go to the consignment shop or try to sell them online, do a little homework and have some idea of how much the clothes are worth in used condition. Also, if you try to sell your clothes online take clear, well-lit pictures of your items to get the best returns.
Sell Your Unused Gift Cards
Do you have gift cards you aren’t going to use? Why not trade them in for cash? Websites like Cardpool allow you to do just that. You can sell your gift cards for a percentage of the balance or trade them in for a credit card you’ll actually use. Cardpool even has physical locations that you can visit and get cash on the spot.
Hold a Yard Sale
Most people are familiar with yard sales. You identify all of the things you no longer need or want, put a price tag on it, and put up a sign or flyer advertising the yard sale.
To get more customers, I recommend advertising the sale on your local Craigslist or Facebook pages. To get the biggest bang for your buck, brush up on your negotiating skills and be prepared to haggle.
People who go to yard sales are looking for deals, so consider bundling items together, throwing in freebies, or lowering prices on certain items you “need” to get rid of before the day is done.
Sell Plasma
This isn’t the easiest the way to make extra money, but it is fast. As long as you don’t mind needles, selling plasma is a proven way to make money on the side.
To start, you’ll need to pass an initial screening. After that, you show up early (or wait in a long line), fill out a personal questionnaire, and then get stuck with a needle and drained (similar to giving blood).
The whole process is anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes and pays in the neighborhood of $20 – $50 per donation. You can typically give 2-3x per week.
Offer Babysitting Services on Care.com & Get a Babysitting Gig
Babysitting is a tried and true way to make extra money. Anyone from teenagers to recent retirees can earn extra money looking after other people’s kids. Word-of-mouth is the traditional way babysitters are referred, but there are also websites like Care.com. Create a profile (include any special certifications, skills, or experience you have) and get started today!
Offer Pet Sitting Services on Rover.com – Dog Sitting/Dog Walking
Do you love dogs, but aren’t ready to take the leap yet and add another member to the family? Why not make some money trying out dog sitting and seeing if you can handle a new member to your family?
If having a dog in your home isn’t your thing, then why not make money walking dogs? You can get some fresh air, exercise, and get the companionship of man’s best friend.
Websites like Rover.com and apps like Wag! offer the opportunity to pickup odd dog walking and dog sitting jobs when your time permits. You won’t make a fortune, but you can make an extra $30 – $40 here and there just hanging out with dogs.
Recycle Scrap Metal
When I was kid, one of the few ways I was able to make money was recycling scrap metal. We would save aluminum cans from sodas, empty them out, stomp them down so that they were flat, and store them in a plastic trashcan. When that trashcan was full, we would take it to a place that paid for scrap aluminum by the pound and make a few bucks.
There are multiple scrap metal recycling facilities that take various different metals including aluminum, copper, brass, and steel. This is an easy way to make money, but what you make will vary by where you live and how much metal you can recycle. Do a little research before your go to ensure you’re making the most you can from your metal.
Rent Out a Parking Spot
Do you live in a congested city or near a major event space? Do you have an extra spot or two? You should consider renting out your spot for some quick cash.
Just advertise the spot online (if its next to a major event center, physical signs may help as well). You can advertise on sites like Craigslist and Facebook with the location, size, whether its covered, any special circumstances (street cleaning, etc.), and your desired price (hourly, daily, monthly).
If you want to reach a bigger audience you can advertise on an app like Spot App or website like Just Park.
Get a Roommate
Do you have a spare room in your house or maybe a room over the garage? A quick way to start generating extra income quickly is to get a roommate. As most of us that went to college remember, having a roommate (especially one we don’t already know) can be a harrowing experience.
To get started you can reach out to your network and see if anyone needs or wants a place to stay. If that doesn’t work, you can advertise in the local paper, online (Craigslist, Facebook, etc.), or ask to put flyers in places you frequent (and know and trust).
If you end up bringing in a roommate outside of your network, be very careful in your interview and selection. In some states (my state included), you have to give a renter ample notice if things don’t work out. This could be months after you’ve made it clear you want them out and filed an eviction notice. This may not be typical. My intention is not to scare you away from making extra money this way. I just urge caution because I’ve seen a similar scenario with a house renter.
Set up A Roadside Stand
Do you live in a tourist destination or near one? An example could be setting up a stand selling sweet grass baskets around a coastal destination in the Southeast. Another example could be setting up a flavored ice booth near or right on the beach. People will inevitably get hot and wonder over to get some relieve.
Most municipalities or counties don’t allow you to just go out, set up a stand, and start making money. You’ll need to research what is required from your local government agency before getting started. Depending on the wares and location, you may not have to anything, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Perform Tasks on TaskRabbit.com
If you’re willing to do odd tasks for others like cleaning or handyman work, you should look into making extra cash with TaskRabbit.
TaskRabbit essentially gives you access to a list of odd jobs that people are willing to pay for. This includes heavy moving, moving and packing services, mounting and installation, assembling furniture, and home improvement.
The pay varies by the skill level and what the tasker is willing to pay, but you can make pretty good side income performing relatively easy tasks.
Sell Old Textbooks
Did you just finish college and don’t need your old textbooks anymore? You should consider turning them into cash on websites like Amazon, BookFinder, and Cash4Books.
On Amazon, it’s as simple as signing up for a seller account and creating a listing for the book you’re trying to sell. You can see what that book is selling for elsewhere by looking up the book and looking under the shopping tab. You can also see what it’s sold for historically on Amazon using a website like CamelCamelCamel (tracks Amazon prices for all of Amazon’s listed items).
Sell Your College Notes
I didn’t know this before I started doing a little research, but people will actually pay you for your college notes. As long as you took excellent notes (definitely no doodles or drool marks), you might be able to sell them on a website like Stuvia.
Sell Your Old Cellphone
Do you have an old cellphone collecting dust? Are you about to upgrade and don’t know what to do with the old phone? Trade it back in for some quick cash. You could always sell it yourself on Amazon (either sell it directly or use their trade-in program) or use websites like Gazelle or Wirefly.
Become a Part Time Tutor
Are you a recent college graduate or expert in your field? Are you interested in teaching or at least helping students understand and perform better? Tutoring is a great way to earn money in your spare time. To get started, you can reach out to your alumni network, post advertisements on college message boards, or even try online college tutoring with websites like Wyzant and Tutor.com.
Sign Up for Clinical Drug Trials
Signing up for clinical drug trials is definitely an interesting way to earn extra money. If you do consider going this route, please make sure you completely understand what you’re signing up for. There are professional’s conducting these tests, but only you know what your comfort level is. If you ever feel uncomfortable, don’t do it. There are plenty of other ways to make extra money.
If you’re interested, you can visit ClinicalTrials.gov to explore clinical trial opportunities in your area.
Other Ways to Make Extra Money
Become a Mystery Shopper
Mystery shoppers get paid to provide feedback on their experience as a customer with a particular company. This is a way for companies to ensure there stores are following company guidelines and identify potential areas for improvement among their stores. A typical job requires you to go to the store, purchase a specific item, then taking a survey. Mystery shoppers typically earn $8 – $25 per visit, but also get reimbursed for whatever purchase is a part of the shopping task.
If you’re interested, companies such as Best Mark, Sinclair Customer Metrics, Market Force, and Intelli-shop are all free to join and easy to use. Once you’re application is processed and you’re approved, you simply login to their websites and choose the jobs you’d like to do.
Drive for Cash with Uber or Lyft
Do you have a clean driving record, a reliable vehicle, and a smartphone? Car-share companies like Uber or Lyft will pay you to drive people from point A to point B. All you have to do is sign up, get approved, and start looking for jobs on the app.
At my previous company, many of the guys that worked there would drive for Uber at night or on the weekend. To get the biggest bang for your buck, you should focus on big holidays or events and areas that are constantly in need of designated drivers (i.e. upscale downtown areas with bars or restaurants and hotels that serve alcohol)
Pickup and Deliver Food with Uber EATS or DoorDash
If driving people around isn’t your idea of fun, then maybe you would be interested in making extra money delivering food to them.
Uber EATS and DoorDash both offer part-time work picking up food orders and delivering them in your area. There is a per-job rate plus tips.
A few tips (no pun intended): don’t be afraid to say no, certain order types take longer (looking at you pizza), and larger orders typically mean better tips.
Pickup Groceries and Deliver Them
Another way to earn extra cash making deliveries is by using Instacart. They take care of the order on their end, you just go and pick up the groceries and deliver them to the customer. You earn a per-trip rate plus rates (similar to other delivery or car-share models).
Another option you might consider is Shipt. It is similar to Instacart except you do the shopping as well as the delivery. You can make up to $22 per hour working part time with Shipt. If you’re interested, please check out: Shipt Shopper Review: How to Make Extra Money as a Shipt Shopper.
Mow Lawns (or Plow Driveways)
Are you interested in earning extra money mowing lawns during the summer or plowing driveways during the winter? If you already have the equipment you can easily start a small business and make cash on the side.
I would start with your neighbors, Home Owner’s Association (HOA) meetings, local businesses (most businesses need this service and will allow you advertise your business card or flyer), and any other word of mouth connections you can access to drum up business.
For even more reach, you may consider setting up an online profile on Plowz and Mowz.
Make Money Picking – Find Antiques and Resell Them
My Mother-in-law loves the show, “American Pickers” because they are constantly finding cool things to sale at their shop. If you love antiques or have a passion for a specific category (toy trains, signs, sports memorabilia, etc.) you should consider picking.
This definitely isn’t the fastest way to make money, but is definitely a viable way to make some extra money on the side. All you need to get started is some seed money, a little time to track down prospects and visit them, and some good negotiating skills to land the deals.
Fly Your Drone for Cash
Are you a drone enthusiast? Why not make that drone pay for itself? There is an ever expanding market for using drones for photography, aerial inspection, and even surveying. A big market right now is emergency work (infrared for search and rescue, infrared for leaks or potential failures in structures, etc.).
To get started, you first need to register with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and obtain a commercial license. Then, you can target what specific niche you’d like to pursue as a drone pilot.
The beautiful thing about this way to make money is that it’s scalable. You could potentially start a small business doing this type of work and replace the income you earn from your main job.
Monetize Your Twitch Channel
Twitch is a popular online service for watching and streaming digital video broadcasts. Twitch was originally created with a sole focus on online gaming and esports (leagues and competitions focused around video gaming).
If you have a twitch channel or are looking to build a channel where you broadcast and comment on game matches, you should consider monetizing your channel. You can make advertising dollars, sponsorships, and viewer donations.
Get a Part-Time Job
So, you wont have the same flexibility as some of the choices above, but you will have steady work and a semi-reliable side income if you get a traditional part-time job. In the current economy, you shouldn’t have any difficulty finding a job in construction, retail, or restaurant work, especially working off hours like weekends or holidays.
In order to make this relevant to your career, try to pick a part time job that helps you learn a skill or is directly relevant to your chosen career path. Everyone understands needing to make extra money, but if you are intentional with what part-time jobs you consider, you can also add relevant experience to your resume.
Find Seasonal Work
Are you a real estate agent of teacher? Seasonal work is a good way to fill in gaps in your own income. There’s the obvious rush around Christmas time for retailers, truck drivers, delivers drivers. There’s also a rush for tax workers during tax season, construction and landscape workers during the summer, and hospitality workers during the tourist season. If your interested, most companies will list the work on their job boards, but you can also look on job sites like Indeed.com.
Ask for a Raise at Work
Has it been a while since you’ve had a raise or promotion at work? Do you feel like your responsibilities have increased or you’re going above and beyond? Most places have an annual review. This is where the manager is required to evaluate you and go over your performance for the the past year and talk about expectations for the next year. This is the perfect time to request a raise or promotion.
To be considered for a raise or promotion, most places require you to take on increased responsibility to demonstrate you’re ability or go above and beyond to demonstrate your value to the company. Before meeting with your supervisor, prepare a plan that lists your major accomplishments, the increased responsibilities you’ve taken on, and what your expectations are on the compensation. Make it as easy as possible on your supervisor.
If after all this, your supervisor still isn’t willing to consider a promotion or raise, consider exploring other options inside and outside the company. If you’re a high performer, you’ll end up getting that raise or promotion, it may just be at another part of the company or a whole new company altogether.
Ask for or Volunteer for Overtime at Work
Does your job allow for overtime? Is there a need at the moment? If so, you could easily reach out to your boss and coworkers and volunteer for extra shifts. Not only does this help you now, but it looks good when it’s time for your performance review. One word of advice, if you are only looking for increased overtime temporarily (3 months, 6 months, etc.), make this clear to your boss upfront.
Start a Bed and Breakfast
Do you live in a popular tourist area? You should consider turning your home into a bed and breakfast. You get to work from home, meet interesting people, and are even eligible for some specific tax write-offs.
It’s not the easiest side hustle as it will require hard work and dedication, but if you like the idea of working from home or already work from home and the innkeeper lifestyle appeals to you, it might be worth it.
Start a Small Business
Do you have a particular skill or passion? Have you thought about monetizing it? If so, you should consider starting a small business focused around that skill or passion. Try to identify a way you can make money while also keeping your startup costs to a minimum.
My former boss has owned his own engineering company for years and has only taken referrals by word of mouth. Over time his network grew and before long, he had more work than he could handle. The only upfront costs he had in the business were the costs to start the business and a couple of software packages to get him started.
A small business is scalable, so that means it could grow to one day replace and surpass your full time income (well surpass in some cases). If you’re serious about a small business, don’t go into it lightly. Create a plan and try to have most things ironed out well in advance. On the flip side, don’t let the unknown hold you back. If you have a plan and are excited about starting it, do it! The worst that can happen is that you’ll fail. Failure is the greatest motivator and teacher and will keep you from making the same mistakes when you try again.
